  1. In biology, the process of cell division. The
  2. genetic material of eukaryotic cells is
  3. carried on a number of chromosomes. To
  4. control their movements during cell division
  5. so that both new cells get a full complement,
  6. a system of protein tubules, known as the
  7. spindle, organizes the chromosomes into
  8. position in the middle of the cell before
  9. they replicate. The spindle then controls the
  10. movement of chromosomes as the cell goes
  11. through the stages of division: interphase,
  12. prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.
